I did these preliminary character sketches for a short comic that I'm working on. I'm doing it all by hand, right now. I might go in and throw some digital screen tone on it, later, but for now it's all tight pencils (or, tighter than my usual pencils), and brush and ink on bristol. As soon as I'm done with this, it's on to Scary Ghost Girl: Season 2! Whee!

I finally went back to the Society of Illustrators for their Jazz Sketch night. I brought my sister and we had a lot of fun. My supplies consisted of my dinky 8x5" sketch book, a micron pen, and a squeeze brush filled with Speedball India Ink. I love to draw bigger, but I'm trying to get used to drawing a little tighter now that my main focus is all those leetle panels in comics.

Anyways, the models were gorgeous. I felt like this portrait looked like I was following one of those "How to Draw a Marvel Babe" guides, but I wasn't. She really looked like this.

AC and I are spending this beautiful Independence Day working hard on the Twinkletoes Gang empire. What's more American than that? Also American: WEAPONS! These are some of the things I did in the unseen margins of the Online Robo Bloodbath (a.k.a. The Nox Story) files that I thought I'd share. A lot of stuff I do gets pushed off the artboard for one reason or another, but it's all part of the (messy) process.

I'm also working on a set of free downloadable Scary Ghost Girl icons and wallpaper. I'll let y'all know when it's ready. Happy 4th!

It's been a little slow building up momentum on the new project, Ramona Carver. There are characters to be invented, a world to be developed, and time travel going back to high school and California. My talented writer, AC, who also happens to be my loving boyfriend (how convenient), came up with the idea of Ramona Carver (RC) last summer and I loved it immediately. It had all of my favorite elements: teenage main characters, nerds, cool kids, smart kids, a story written for a wide audience, and southern California.

It's just now, after finishing up season one of Scary Ghost Girl, however, that we're able to dive in. Here's how that goes: The hours that I'm able to fit in around my 45 hour day job work week are a tight squeeze. I wake up at 6 a.m. when AC turns on the lights and brings me coffee (wonderful). Then I try to fit in an hour of RC after cereal and before dressing myself, and then it's off to work. If I bring my lunch and lug my laptop and tablet with me (always) I work on RC all lunch hour. I get home at 6:00 p.m. if I'm lucky, and I go straight back to my (sweet) drafting table. I work until AC's done cooking dinner (GOD, I'm spoiled) and, despite all the rushing, we do our best to take a leisurely dinner (1 hr). It's good for digestion and relations. Then... we do more work! Until midnight when it is time for some glorious sleep.

Not counting the weekend (even MORE work!), that's about seven hours of work per day, in addition to the nine hour day job. But we do it because we love it. We do it because we have to. And, as proven by Scary Ghost Girl, we do it because a good idea will haunt you in your sleep until you finish it.

That's all for now.

Holy guacamole! It's the end of season one!! With that completed, we're taking a bit of a hiatus to build scaryghostgirl.com. I'll be putting all the Scary Ghost Girl strips up there and more! Hopefully-- fingers crossed-- I can attend to this Illustrator-to-web color problem (time to put on my trial-and-error pants). After that, Al and I will be devoting our undivided attention to Ramona Carver. We've planned out our next six months in comics. Happy New Year, eh?

So there will be many posts here to come. I have some paper dolls in the lineup, illustrations, comics, and Ramona Carver tasty tidbits. Stay tuned, Ghost Fans!

This is not an outfit that I wear currently (though Halloween is coming up...) but it was a uniform that I wore for two years, so I think it deserves a place here. This was my Cafe Lalo uniform (of "You've Got Mail" fame). And those Dr. Martins caused me to nearly get fired because, according to Lalo himself, they made me "look like a factory worker." Ahhh, those were the days...

Several times per week I wake up in the morning and make some sort of horrible noise. Then I say "I have NOTHING to WEAR!" Of course, that is not true. My closet, dresser, and crevices under my bed are absolutely stuffed with clothes. So to help me better appreciate the clothes that I grudgingly put on every morning, I've created a paper doll of myself and a series of tiny paper replicas of the outfits that I wear.

P.S. I intentionally designed lingerie for this paper doll that I do not own so that you will not imagine me in my underwears.

I heard this story on NPR yesterday about an Italian priest who wanted to change the image of nuns by holding a beauty pageant. He was to call it "Miss Sister 2008." Because of the controversy the idea caused, the pageant has been postponed.

I understand the controversy but, personally, I think it's a really sweet idea. (story here)
